How do I start an STR business with no experience?

You don't need to have everything figured out before you start. When Aish joined Streamlined Education, she had no business experience, no LLC, and no idea which market to invest in. With the right guidance, she went from researching STRs to purchasing, designing, and launching her first property in just six months—while building a business around the flexibility she wanted for her family.

Who is Aish?

Aish is a mom of two from Apex, North Carolina, and a former Deloitte consultant who spent years navigating the demands of corporate life.

Between traveling for work and raising two young children, she reached a point where she knew she wanted something different.

She stepped away from consulting but wasn't ready to stop building something for herself.

The challenge? She had no business background and didn't know where to begin.

Short-term rentals caught her attention because they offered an opportunity to build a business while maintaining the flexibility she wanted with her family.

Why did Aish choose Streamlined Education?

Aish first discovered Madeleine through a social media video about systems and automation in short-term rentals.

With her background in technology consulting, the approach immediately resonated.

She had seen plenty of information about STR tax benefits, but very little about the actual systems required to operate a property.

Hearing how bookings, cleaners, and backup cleaners could work together through automation made her realize there was a more structured way to build this business.

She reached out to Madeleine, connected with the team, and enrolled in mentorship within days.

For Aish, it wasn't about figuring everything out through trial and error. It was about learning from people who had already built successful systems and could help her avoid unnecessary mistakes.

How did she go from knowing nothing about STRs to buying her first property?

When Aish started mentorship, she didn't know whether she wanted to invest in a beach market, a mountain destination, or a city.

She hadn't established her LLC or selected a market.

During her initial roadmap call, the team discussed the goal of getting her first property that year.

Aish wasn't entirely convinced she could make it happen.

But with a clear plan and support from the coaches, she started taking one step at a time.

She worked with the team's recommended CPA on her business setup, received property analysis guidance from Alex, and used Kelly's market knowledge to help evaluate mountain destinations.

Within approximately two months, she was under contract.

By June, just three months after joining mentorship, she had closed on her first property.

How did Aish get her first STR ready to launch?

After purchasing her property, Aish turned her attention to design, branding, and preparing the home for guests.

She used the mentorship's templates as a starting point and completed a design strategy session with the designer.

From there, she developed her brand standards, ordered furnishings, and worked through the setup process.

By the end of August, the property was ready.

On September 21st, Aish officially launched her first short-term rental.

In just six months, she had gone from having no STR experience or business setup to owning and operating her first property.

What role did the mentorship coaches play in her journey?

Aish credits the mentorship team with supporting her through every stage of the process.

Alex helped her understand property analysis. Kelly provided insight into mountain markets. Sara helped establish her roadmap, while other coaches guided her through design, operations, and guest experience.

She also leaned heavily on Chena and Summer, sometimes asking multiple questions a day.

But the biggest change wasn't simply learning which steps to take.

It was learning how to think like a business owner.

Through the team's guidance, Aish developed greater confidence in making decisions, approaching guest service, and calmly handling unexpected situations.

She even shared that when an emergency came up at her property, she was able to work through it one step at a time.

What surprised Aish most about starting her STR business?

Her own confidence.

Before mentorship, Aish was accustomed to making major decisions alongside her husband.

But this STR business was something she wanted to take ownership of herself.

With support from the coaches, she felt confident enough to choose and purchase the property, manage the setup, and prepare for launch independently.

In fact, her husband didn't see the property until it was almost ready to welcome guests.

For his 40th birthday, she surprised him with a weekend at their new mountain property before it officially launched.

Looking back, Aish was amazed by how much she had accomplished on her own in such a short period of time.

Could she have done it without mentorship?

Aish believes she could have eventually figured out the process independently.

But she estimates it might have taken her two to three years instead of six months, along with additional stress, time, and potentially costly mistakes.

What made the difference was having experienced coaches, proven resources, and a clear path forward.

Rather than spending months trying to figure out every decision alone, she had people to turn to throughout the process.

And that support helped her move forward with confidence.

What advice does Aish have for someone who wants to get started?

"Progress over perfection."

Aish's biggest advice is to make a decision and keep moving forward.

You don't need to know everything before you begin, and every step doesn't have to be perfect.

Her experience is a reminder that meaningful progress comes from taking action, asking questions, and continuing to move toward your goals.

Individual results vary. Aish’s market, property purchase, timeline, and outcomes are her own and are not a projection of what any other owner will experience.
